Languedoc-Roussillon
With a civilization stretching back thousands of years, the Languedoc region in France is home to some fantastic historical sites and places to visit.
Languedoc-Roussillon, former région of France, encompassed the southern départements of Lozère, Gard, Hérault, Aude, and Pyrénées-Orientales and was roughly coextensive with the former province of Languedoc. In "2016" the Languedoc-Roussillon région was joined with the région of Midi-Pyrénées to form the new administrative entity of Occitanie.
Languedoc-Roussillon’s largest city is Montpellier, a thriving modern city in the Hérault, with a historic center; other major cities in the region are Nimes, Narbonne, Sete and Perpignan.
Boasting a mild, sunny climate and an ideal location between the Cevennes, Pyrenees, Camargue and Mediterranean Sea, Languedoc-Roussillon offers visitors a beautiful mosaic of landscapes alternating between sandy beaches, lagoons, garrigue scrubland, vines, hills, wild gorges, and mountainous terrain.
Today it’s best known for its vineyards, which produce a third of France's wines, and the busy beaches sprawling along its Mediterranean shore.
